They say not all fingers are the same, and that’s absolutely right. But aren’t all thumbs the same (or similar?) and all index fingers? People are unique and that’s exactly what is the diversity, innovation and different thought process which they bring towards managing the daily new
In the days of old, occupations were more or less defined within a family or a group or a community. Names of families became associated with their occupation. In Parsees in particular the name stuck for generations. I had a friend Daruwala, and no prizes for guessing what item / product was their store in New Market selling. Purohit is a very typical gangetic Bengal, UP title and so is Acharya etc. For generations, the elders will transfer the knowledge and skills down to their next line, fathers to son, to brother to nephew. In most, this was a way to protect the intricacy of the skill and even keep the ‘secret recipe’ within the family
Thus there was an essence of trust, ‘copyright’ or trademark for their knowledge and skill, all of which became a part of the new world when industrialisation took over. Most MSMEs of today are also family businesses and which is why the fear of losing what has been built over generations and so their identification of people to work with them is also based on minimalist transfer of knowledge and skills, limited upward movement and empowerment of people. Such practice while retaining the originality and value chain however has been a restrictive practice when it compares to the speed and size of volume of the larger corporations which are exactly the opposite – open architecture, upward mobility and freedom / flexibility, reward for performance as well as innovation etc.
For MSMEs to move upward and catch the growth curve, they must be able to drive their advantage while cashing on to the awkwardness of the MNC which is impacted by their sheer nature of organisation and or size
The employee is a Family Member, but also a key resource for the business to grow and thrive. SO…. the good news is that Employees are more valuable and have greater contribution possibility based on the close value system which the Boss looks for, unlike the Corporation which tends to hire based on Knowledge and Skills (using a CV approach). This significant advantage is what can enable MSMEs to grow organically but exponentially
